The mechanic
Viktor upgrades his abilities with stacks from minion and monster kills. A cannon minion is worth several regular ones, which makes every stolen cannon expensive.
Why it needs saying
It is the one mechanic in the game where taking a minion off an ally sets them back permanently, and almost nobody knows it. One clear line early saves twenty minutes of catch-up.

A cannon minion gives Viktor several times the stacks of a melee one. Say it in the first minutes, before your support has eaten two of them out of habit.

A cannon minion is worth ten fragments to Viktor, an ordinary minion one. Killing the cannons before he touches them, or zoning him when they arrive, delays every one of his upgrades.
