Words of the role
- top
The top lane, and the player on it. The most isolated lane on the map.
- tp
Teleport, the summoner spell that carries a champion to an allied structure, minion or ward after a channel.
- 1v1
One versus one: a duel. The numbers describe who fights whom, and 4v5 means the team is fighting a player short.
- ahead
Ahead means more gold and levels than your opponent; behind means fewer. The two words that describe the state of a lane.
- care
Be careful. The default warning word of LoL chat.
- cover
Holding a lane for an ally who is away, or protecting a player while they do something.
- freeze
Holding the wave still near your own tower by killing only what you must, forcing the enemy to overextend to farm.
- prio
Lane priority: being able to leave your lane first, because you are pushing and your opponent cannot follow.
- up
Available, ready to use. Said of a spell, a summoner or an objective. The opposite of down.
- backdoor
Hitting the enemy base alone while the rest of your team keeps everyone occupied elsewhere.
- bait
Making the enemy believe something is safe to take, then punishing them for it.
- bot
The bottom lane, where the ADC and support play together. The only two-player lane.
- build
The set of items a champion assembles, and the verb for choosing them.
- engage
Starting a fight. Also a noun for a team's ability to start one at all.
- fed
A champion who has collected many kills and is now far stronger than everyone else.
- flank
Attacking a fight from the side or from behind, where the enemy's carries stand unprotected.
- gank
A surprise attack on an enemy lane, usually by the jungler, to create a numbers advantage.
- grubs
The three void grubs that sit in the baron pit from the eighth minute. Each kill makes your attacks burn towers; all three also summon voidmites that help push them.
Champion pages for this role
- Cho'GathCho'Gath's ultimate devours a target and gives him a permanent stack of bonus health, but only six stacks can come from minions and small monsters. Past that, every stack has to come from a champion or an epic monster, so his team has to leave him the last hit on drake, herald and baron.
- KayleKayle is among the weakest champions in the game before level eleven and among the strongest after sixteen. Her team plays around surviving that gap.
- KledKled rides Skaarl, and loses him when his mount's health runs out. Dismounted he is far weaker, and Skaarl cannot come back for at least four seconds. His ultimate leaves a nine second trail behind him that speeds up every ally who follows it.
- MordekaiserMordekaiser's ultimate drags one enemy into a separate realm for seven seconds, where nobody else can see them, reach them or help either of them. His team plays a four versus four while he duels, and steals 10% of the target's stats for the duration.
- NasusNasus permanently increases his Q damage every time he lands a killing blow. His entire game is stacking that ability.
- OrnnFrom level 13 Ornn upgrades his own legendary item into a stronger Masterwork version. At each level from 14 to 17 he can do the same for one ally, once per ally, as long as they own the right item and stand within 600 units of him.
- PantheonPantheon's ultimate launches him across a large part of the map, so he can reach a fight that looked impossible to join.
- RyzeRyze's ultimate opens a portal. After a two second channel, Ryze and every ally standing inside the circle are teleported up to 3000 units away. Allies have to step in before the channel ends, or stay out if they do not want to go.
- ShenShen's ultimate teleports him to any ally anywhere on the map and shields them, so a fight across the map can turn into a two versus one.
- SionSion returns to life for a few seconds after dying, so his death is often the start of a play rather than the end of one.
- Tahm KenchTahm Kench's ultimate swallows an ally for up to three seconds, carries them while he runs, and spits them out with a shield of 650 to 950. Any movement command from the swallowed ally ends it early.
- YasuoYasuo's ultimate can only be cast on an enemy who is airborne within 1400 units. Knock-ups, knock-backs and pulls all count, and most of them come from his allies, who have to land and time their crowd control for him.
- YorickYorick summons a maiden that pushes a lane by herself, which makes him the best split pusher in the game as long as his team occupies everyone else.
- ZacWhen Zac dies he splits into four bloblets that reform into him after four to eight seconds. If all four are killed first, he stays dead. The passive has a five minute cooldown, and his allies are the only thing standing between the blobs and the enemies.
